When my daughter was born, a good friend loaned me her son's newborn-sized fitted terry cloth diapers and covers. I used these on my daughter from week 3 to week 10 (she was pretty teeny). I was extremely grateful for my friend's generosity for two reasons:- It allowed me to try out the whole cloth diapering thing to make sure I really wanted to stick with it before I invested my own money into buying some.
- It also saved me money by allowing me to skip buying diapers in the newborn size, since most babies don't wear that size for very long.
So here's my tip: Pass on the love! If you have cloth diapers that you are not using, loan them out to someone so they can see how much fun cloth diapering can be.
I have gotten two more friends into cloth diapering by loaning out my size small diapers and covers that are not in use so that they could try them out. If those two friends each get another friend hooked, and so on and so on, think of the effect... And hey, getting additional use out of a product already produced and purchased is another way to have less impact on the environment!

What a great idea! I sometimes fantasize about a "cloth diaper library" that people could use, risk free, for the first few months. You've actually come up with a system that works without a whole lot of extra work. Thanks for the tip!
If I had a friend loan me some diapers to try it out, I definitely would. All of my cloth diapering friends seem to be in the midwest. Where's the desert diaper love???
Great idea. I almost did this, but the friend ended up buying the same diapers I use after reading one of my blog posts ;) about how easy it is to use cloth! I will keep this in mind for the future though!
That is great! I started using cloth diapers because a family member told me about how much easier they were to use now. My son had a lot of problems with rashes to (with the disposables) and had to have a prescription rash ointment. The cloth diapers really saved us and prevented me from having to use the steroid creams on him.
Great post!

We have a pretty large cloth diaper layette (that we mostly got gifted to us throug my mother, but with a few hand-me-downs from friends). We're hanging onto it for now in hopes that we'll have a second child, but after that we really have to think of who to give it too.
The newborn stuff really is important to pass on because that's the stuff that doesn't get too worn out. I think if we get through a second kid our large size covers will definitely be all used up (and some have already gotten too dirty to use), but we have large-size hand-me-down pre-folds that we can still use even though they are pretty ratty at this point.
