Or, Food for Thought...
Regarding finances, Dave Ramsey says, “Why be normal, when normal is broke?”
The other night my husband asked, "Why can't you make anything normal?" (as he ate a piece of healthier spice cake with whole wheat and flax seed).
I shot back, “Why be normal, when normal is obese and on the verge of type II diabetes and heart disease?" How nice of me.
I do make some weird things. He is a good sport. And he doesn't usually complain because he almost always has something homemade to eat.
Here’s my thought:
Since neither of us are ready to completely give up our sweets, I want to do what I can to substitute better-for-they-body ingredients where possible. We eat our share of desserts. But at least we know what is in them, because I made them.
"Don't fool yourself," he says. "A dessert is still a dessert." (Meaning it is still bad for you.)
"Exactly!" I reply, ignoring his implication. "It just tastes even better this way!"
He just chuckles and shakes his head.

That's my philosophy as well- even if it's dessert it's better than store-bought junk right? Thanks for sharing. Kelly
Ha! I got a good chuckle out of your post. It's very true too!! We are on a journey of healthier eating, and I do alot of that by substituting other things, and making more "homemade". I also read lots of labels and try to buy things without high fructose corn syrup, etc..I tend to be the one who balks at things though because oh, do I love my pasta and bread and rice (C: and hubby wouldn't complain if I got rid of all those things from our diet. But I have a harder time doing that. So I try to minimize it, and use whole wheat pasta and more whole wheat breads.
Hehe...I'm with ya. We don't want to be NORMAL either at our house. And yes, we still like our desserts. But I like that it's possible to make yummy, healthier desserts..and I think they taste even better too!
I have a hubby is a picky eater & he says that a lot. But I am not sure what normal is?
At least when we make something from scratch we aren't sticking alot of presivities in them. I still make white bread b/c my wheat bread doesn't but I know what is going in to it.
I totally agree with you. I try making healthier substitutes and sometimes it works and sometimes it's a flop.
It doesn't always taste just as good as the full calorie, full fat, lard infested stuff - but to me, it's "good enough". I can't totally give up on things like cake/cookies etc.
My dh has made a similar comment - cake made with whole wheat flour is still cake. Still has sugar.
I am trying to cook healthier also. I am putting more whole grains in things, even desserts. My husband has not always been thrilled with the results so I am getting creative with things. Yesterday I used 1/4 whole wheat in a recipe and he did not even notice. I guess slow change is best sometimes.
I was very blessed to grow up with a mom who always cooked very healthy. We almost never allowed to have sugar, but we did have sweets, cooked with honey and other good ingredients. And they were SOO tasty! I have tried lots of the same recipes on my husband and he never complains! And I don't feel guilty eating more than one when I know it's healthy for me!
That's funny what your husband said.
