Baking Bread vs Wal-Mart Bread

I wish I liked to bake my own bread. I want to like to bake my own bread. I’ve tried to like to bake my own bread. But I just don’t.

I have attempted a handful of highly rated recipes. One turned out good. But I’m lazy and it was too much work for me to do it every week. Or too much time, I should say. And my husband has not been crazy about the results of any of my attempts.

So, I buy my 100% whole wheat bread at Wal-Mart. For $1.48 a loaf. And that works for me.

3 things I say to justify it:

We eat sandwiches everyday for lunch. We don’t usually eat bread at any other time. From what I’ve read, many people that bake their own bread still buy their sandwich bread.

I don’t have a bread maker or a spot for it.

For whole wheat bread, I don’t think I could make it for much cheaper.

What I still feel guilty about:

The store bought bread has sugar or high fructose corn syrup in it and supporting Wal-Mart (not a huge fan).

I bake my own bread and it is so worth it. The bread in the stores is "dead bread" with no nutrition, unless it is in the freezer case. Bread will probably hit $5.00 a loaf by the end of the summer and you might wish you did bake your own, lol. I bake mine with only raw honey for about 1.50/loaf. It has lots of nutrition to boot. Atleast you have the tools you need to bake bread, when you will need too soon :o)

I buy Nature's Own 100% Whole Grain Sugar Free and it doesn't have any sugar or corn syrup! My husband has diabetes and he doesn't need to be wasting his sugar intake on bread. It has a green section on the label that makes it easy to pick out from the other versions.

I've only recently started baking bread (I use my Kitchenaid mixer with a dough hook, not a bread machine) and I enjoy it, but I still buy store bread. Why? Because around here, homemade bread is a special treat, not a daily event. I suppose as I get better at it, I'll do it more often. But right now, a mix of the two helps.
One thing that works for me is to have my bread flour pre-measured in zipper bags--I'll measure out a few loaves' worth at a time. That way I can dump it right into the mixing bowl without all the mess of measuring flour.
OMG, if Belle is right and we'll be paying $5 for bread...I guess I'd better start stocking up on yeast, LOL!

I just recently started baking my own bread--after a friend gave me a bread machine. My girls prefer homemade whole wheat to storebought anything now because they're used to it. Do what works for you!

Blessings--
