These Holiday Gift Sacks from Land's End look cute. (Thanks for the tip Thrifty Florida Mama!)
I have thought about sewing our own Santa Sacks for our family.
Pros:
- Festive!
- Reusable (year after year)
- Inexpensive to make if you find a good deal on fabric
AND as long as you don't also individually wrap the presents, you:
- Produce less trash than using wrapping paper.
- Save money on wrapping paper in the long run.
To up the thriftyness and greeness of the project you could even re-purpose fabric from an item that you are planning to give away.
Cons:
- I would miss wrapping presents. I like wrapping presents.
- Opening wrapped presents is fun, too.
What do you think? Does anyone out there use anything like these bags?
I doubt I will get around to this project this year... Actually, rather than large Santa Sacks, I am more likely to use fabric to wrap presents individually (and then save the fabric after they are opened and reuse the fabric for another year). Is that possible? I just really like the way individually wrapped boxes look under the Christmas tree!
Hmm... Maybe I'll try to remember to look at Christmas fabric when it is on clearance after the holidays. For next year.

My husband's family has a huge supply of small bags with drawstrings. They've been made out of festive fabric by his aunt as a "green" alternative to wrapping gifts. I LOVE how easy it is to wrap gifts for them (just find the right sized bag, pull it shut, put the gift tag sticker on the string to prevent peecking and WONDERFUL for odd shaped gifts). And, you can still open them individually. But, they don't look as nice under the tree. I'm trying not to be shallow but I do mix bags and boxes under our own tree. They look easy to make, but I've just collected used ones from the year before and reuse them instead of making my own.
Thanks so much for your post! My mom made our family a set of holiday gift bags in 1980 and we've been using them for the last 28 years! We all get nostalgic as we open bags that are filled with fun holiday memories. Each of us has a few of our own that my mom customized with iron-on letters and there are several of all shapes and sizes that are for everyone. We even have them for Valentines Day, Easter, and birthdays! So--if you haven't guessed yet, I would enthusiastically endorse fabric gift bags. They're fun, festive, earth-friendly and frugal! Thanks for joining us for Thrifty Green Thursday!
I think they're a great idea! You should take a look at our very first Green Baby Guide post--it ran on Christmas Eve last year, and it was about reusable gift wrap! I have a picture of the presents I wrapped, which did involve some boxes and bows. I think unwrapping these presents was just as fun as ripping the paper off regular ones. I don't have any fabric gift bags at the moment, but I think there could still be some element of suspense when taking presents out of them.
Another thought: so many people give gifts in paper gift bags, anyway. They are reusable, but fabric ones are probably nicer to have year after year.
That's a great idea--I've never thought of sacks instead of wrapping paper--definitely a lot less waste.
Several years ago, mom made bags for gift wraping. I liked not having to buy wraping paper (which is thrown away so quickly) and am planing to make a set of my own this year (after the holidays - when fabric goes on sale!!)
I just found your blog and love it. I've added you to my "Daily Blogs" list in my favorites! :)
As far as the santa sacks go...I am like you, I like wrapping gifts, and my kids love unwrapping them, so I'll still wrap. But I like your fabric ideas!
But, I think these sacks would be a cute idea to use to tote all the gifts when you're going to the inlaws or the grandparents for a Christmas celebration.
