Frugal at Whole Foods

My frugal tip of the week: Don't forget to check out the store brands... at Whole Foods, that is!

If you are a bargain shopper, you are probably used to trying out a generic or store brand product when you don't have a coupon for the name brand product. Remember that you can do the same thing at the big name health food stores, like Whole Foods.

I shop at WF only occasionally, when something I like is on sale, or I need soap or shampoo. The store is about 35 minutes from my home, and 10 minutes out of the way on my commute. So when I am there, I try to make the most of it. I have found that their 365 Everyday Value (store brand) items are very reasonable.

Not every item has a 365 Everyday Value equivalent, but many do. Some things I have purchased are all-purpose soap, shampoo, chlorine free diapers (for travelling), cereal bars (for travelling), veggie chips, whole wheat tortillas, and milk.

And don't forget that they have sales, too. Just this past week, ground beef was $2.50/lb. Not the cheapest you could buy ground beef, but a good buy on a quality product.

So don't be intimidated... if you are wanting to shop at Whole Foods or a similar store, take your time, and see what you find!

I like to buy the 365 brand soda. The ginger ale, black cherry, and root beer are our favorites. They are reasonably priced and made from organic ingredients, so I feel like they are a little better for us when we want something fizzy. Plus, whenever we have people over for dinner the soda always gets rave reviews. Oh, and the 365 brand chocolate bars are really great too.

We don't have a whole foods near us, but there is a fresh market and from what I understand they are about the same thing! Do check them out because they do have good specials, they had fresh ground pork sausage 1.99 a pound and you can't get the rolled sausage for that price! I just have to be careful because I could spend some money fast in that store :)

Good to know! I like Whole Foods, but I usually shy away because of the high prices. Thanks for the tip!

I just moved within walking distance of a Whole Foods, so I have been going there more often. I, too, have noticed that some things aren't terribly expensive there. They have really good bulk bins. The dried black beans are just $1.29, which is cheaper than Safeway (I think).

I should check out their bulk foods more often. I've never gotten anything from the bins, but I know several people that do, and yeah, they say they are good prices! Thanks for the reminder.
