Safer Microwave Reheating

I try to have an all-cloth kitchen. As in cloth napkins and cloth kitchen towels - no paper napkins or paper towels. (This really annoys my husband by the way.)

So what to do we do when we want to reheat a plate of food in the microwave? Well, I used to cover it with waxed paper. Then I learned that most wax paper is covered with a petroleum based coating – ew. And cling-wrap or other plastic in the microwave (or anywhere with heating food) is not recommended.

My pyrex food storage set is glass - but they have plastic lids - so I don’t want to put the lids in the microwave.

My solution?
I make a lid by covering the plate or dish with another plate or dish upside down over it. Safer, free, easy, and better for the environment, too. I also do the same thing if I am saving leftovers for a short time in the refrigerator, like if my husband is getting home late.

I like to think it is what my grandmother would have done!

Excellent tip! I used to do this and don't know why I stopped.

I can't believe you don't use paper products! So thrifty - I love this site - and I loved the enchiladas by the way!

Hi there. :)

I've faced the same dilemma recently since trying to purge our home of plastic... the plate idea is a great one! What I do is just throw a cloth napkin over it the same way I used to do with paper towels. Works like a charm. :) Then if the napkin isn't too soiled from the food, I use it for my dinner napkin as well. :)

Alissa,
I'll have to try that! For some reason I've been scared the cloth would burst into flames or something! :) Have no idea why..!
Thanks for your input-

Do you think its okay to use a plastic cover as long as it does not touch the food? I want to get rid of our water cooler because it uses the big 5 gallon bottles that have the number 7 on the bottom but dh would probably throw a fit. why don't men worry about these things? LOL, anyway back to the plastic cover... what do you think?

Jennifer-
Good question! For me, I'd rather just play it safe and not use it if I have another alternative. This resource

http://www.iatp.org/iatp/publications.cfm?accountID=421&refID=102202

says if you do use it, don't let it touch the food, so I would think that is at least better. Thanks for stopping by!
