I am making a list of meals for the entire month of October. Why? I am not sure. I guess I just have the time now. And it is helping me plan my shopping. I don't want to have to worry about running to the store a lot with 2 kiddos in tow since I will be heading back to work again and will be busier.
I haven't decided yet if I want to do a monthly meal plan post or keep it a weekly post... I am thinking still keep it weekly to allow for more flexibility and last minute changes without throwing too much off kilter. I will just draw from my master list and fill in the slots each week. Sound okay? Anyone have a strong opinion?
Looking at my list of meals, I can tell it is fall. The dinner themes seem to be beefy, cheesy, and soupy. The desserts seem to be chocolately, pumpkiny, or apple-y.
I plan to do one big Aldi trip at the first of the month and one Costco trip mid-month. And then a couple other quick run throughs while we are out and about just as needed for milk and fruit. I will still try to hit any other stores for stock up items on sale that I don't want to miss... but only if it is a screaming good deal. Simplify - that's the goal.

hi :)
i follow your blog pretty regularly - i came upon it randomly and love the idea of pre-planning meals. i quit my job a few months ago to stay at home with my daughter. i'm now watching a few children to help supplement our income. :) your idea of planning meals is something that i haven't really ever done (haven't had time or the energy to really make regular dinners! :))...and your ideas make sense and i like it. it helps you stay on a budget (which we MUST follow now!), keeps you from overbuying food, etc. :) pure genius! :) hehe :)
you do plan so nicely - i don't have the thoughts, yet, to even try to plan for breakfast, lunch, or even desserts! (you're so thorough! :))... you're very good! :)
anyway, i, too, came up with a huge master list of dinners that i reguarly make and that appeal to our family. i am also in a constant search for other meal ideas - and your site offers that, too! :) i pick from the master list each week...trying not to repeat too much, etc.
i haven't been able to plan for a full month - there are times where a day on a weekly menu plan gets pushed to another day or week...
but, i do love the idea of having a list of meals and picking from them as the days pass... :) and, i like buying the ingredients ahead of time instead of having to "run to the store" to get things that i should have bought beforehand! :)
we interchange meals throughout the week, too...so if the weather is rainy and we had planned on grilling, we switch days with another day...or if it's cold, we have soup! :) and, i'm a little "moody" with my food - sometimes, i'm not "in the mood" for one thing, so we make another... :) so, while the planning helps a lot, it still allows you to be flexible! :)
I have a question for you - where do you keep all of your recipes? :) do you keep them on your computer, or do you have a "recipe book" going that you reference and add to throughout the menu planning process? :) i am thinking that it would be wise for me to get a notebook and start writing/gluing my recipes in it as we go - i have a feeling that, soon, we'll have a million recipes floating all over the place! :)
i will continue to look at your blog and get ideas from you if you plan weekly or monthly! :) but i wanted to give you a shout out and let you know that your blog has helped me...and i enjoy reading your ideas and whatnot! :) it's great to "connect" to people even though you don't "know" them! :) :) kinda nice to have support out there... :)
hope you have a great day! :) thanks so much for your ideas, recipes, and life stories! :)
always,
robin :)
Hey Robin, thanks for your sweet comment! I emailed you - let me know if you didn't get it.
Recipe organization is something I need to work on. Most of the ones I use are somewhere online, so I just read the recipe off my computer as a cook... I debating on printing them off and putting them in a notebook so ALL of them (online and ones on paper people have given to me) are in one spot. I can't decide if it is worth the work.
If anyone reads this and has some good suggestions, let us know! :)
