Help me with Some Recycling Solutions

Shannon says that this week's Works for me Wednesday is backwards - we get to solicit advice. So I am asking for help.

Please.

Here's the situation.

The bad news: Our city does not offer curbside recycling. Our city does not even have a recycling drop-off center.

Well, I take that back. They do have newspaper and magazine recycling at the schools. And they are looking into citywide recycling because enough people have petitioned for it (yay!) even though we will probably have to pay extra for the service. But anyways, it is not in the immediate future.

The good news: in another city, where I work, they have an awesome recycling drop-off center. You can take just about anything. I like to take stuff there.

The problem: My husband does not like my recycling bins (cardboard boxes) taking up space in the garage. He sneakily will throw my recycling out with the trash when I am not paying attention. He claims I let it pile up too much. Sometimes I do - because I don't like to make a trip to the recycling center with a measly little box.

What to do? Should I try some more organized-looking plastic containers? Does it get stinky if it is closed up? Should I try to keep the recycling someplace else? Should I give up? Should I limit myself to one bin and go more often? Just writing this has already helped me brainstorm some ideas... but I'm still not sure what to try.

Please help! Tell me what you do with your recycling and what works for you...

Then feel free to go visit Rocks In My Dryer and advise some other folks on their dilemmas, too.

We have a metal tub (a cute one) that sits out by our trash bin in the kitchen. So it's easy to throw recycling in there. Then when that bin is full the kids (5 & 7) take it out to the garage and dump it into a larger container that eventually gets sent to the recycling center. Make it easy & fun, plus get everyone involved! (And I'm pretty sure my hubby has throw out the recycling more than once!)

My dad used to throw out the bottles and cans I used to sort out in the garage, too!

I think the solution is to tell your husband to STOP throwing them away. Maybe you could promise to take them out regularly, like the first Monday of every month or something. Maybe he's just afraid they'll collect forever.

Let's hope you get some curbside recycling soon!

We just keep all of ours in rubbermaid-type containers. But, we have curbside pick up (which we pay for), so it's not like we have to lug the containers to a drop off site.

Good luck!

I would have seperate containers inside a bigger container. I have to take some of our recyling to another place as well. Ugh!

We don't have curbside either which is so sad (and such a pain). My sis got these nifty bags that we use. They are labeled glass, plastic, paper and are a very thick plasticy type material (so helpful I know) so they don't leak and hold a lot. They are approximately the size of a paper grocery bag laid on it's side (so you put stuff in on the long side.

Catching up on my reading blogs and found yours thru "Rocks".

Yeah for recycling! We don't have curbside recycling either. But we do have dropoff points around town on rotating days.

I store my paper/cardboard in a rubbermaid container. I make sure and open all my boxes (like cereal) on both ends so it folds flat. This makes it able to store much more and few trips to the recycling.

For my plastic, I bought huge black "trash bags". I think they are really called recycling bags. I bought them at the Stine's Lumbar. They are much thicker than a regular black garbage bag. I rinse my plastic containers (milk) and then put the lid on, but don't tighten all the way. Then I smush it so it collapses. Sometimes I step on them too. Then I screw the lid on tight and most of the time it holds the shape.

I keep the rubbermaid tote in the laundry room between the upright freezer and the wall. Fits perfectly. Then I put the trash bag or plastic recycling on top of that. The containers are rinsed before putting them in the recycling, so no smell. The papers are stored in the tub so they are contained. When either one is full, I take them both to the recycling drop off. I use to put the plastic recycling outside in a metal trash can with the liner inside. It was a pain to go in and out so now I just keep it inside ontop the rubbermaid tote.

Hope this gives you some ideas! Just don't stop recycling :)
