Real Milk

After reading Real Food, I have been curious about real (raw: unpasturized) milk. I want to try it. Why?

Pros:
  • more nutritious
  • more natural (fewer additives and sketchy stuff)
Cons:
  • pricey
  • more calories
  • would have to cut back on milk consumption (we LOVE milk) because of the previous 2 reasons. ***Thought: Could I water it down, or would that totally ruin it?
  • inconvenient (would add another errand: stopping at the local farm to pick it up)

If you are new to the real milk idea, find more information here.

Has anyone tried raw milk? What are your thoughts? Am I crazy?

My husband and I watched a short clip about raw milk and we thought that the people going out of their way to buy something like milk was crazy. However then I thought about it, why should raw milk not be readily available if others want to drink it? I have read about the benefits and I have some friends who buy it, never had any problems. If you want to try it, why not use it along with the milk you are already buying. It doesn't have to be an all or nothing thing. I personally don't believe that milk is a superfood, but that is just me. My daughter won't drink it and never has, but she gets her calcium from other sources. She had nearly 2 years of breastmilk though so if she never likes cows milk I am fine with that. I put it in her oatmeal and we use lactaid free milk that has no growth hormones (I am extremly lactose intolerant). I do not like the growth hormones used. But does raw milk not have the growth hormones? I am curious about that because that has to do with raising of the cow. If it does then that would be a big concern. Just my little thoughts.

Is it safe to drink, or is there a greater risk of harmful bacteria? Where would you buy it from?

Carrie, good point about it not having to be an all or nothing thing! I will remember that. I am still checking into it, but from what I understand, growth hormones are given in commercial dairy farm settings... small farms would not need to use them... but it can't hurt to be sure! Another thought for you - I've heard that many lactose intolerant people can handle raw milk just fine because of the different composition - I don't know if that is true or not, but it is interesting, huh?

Morgan, there are places to buy on the realmilk.com website - you can look it up by state and city. I'll let you know what I find out and do. If it comes from clean practices, there is less risk of bacteria than from your typical salad. Since in our state you can only buy it privately, there is not as much regulation, so you have to know and trust your farmer.

Thanks for your thoughts you two, I really appreciate it.

Our family loved when we used "real" milk. We have gone back to store milk because we now qualify for WIC which is so beneficial for our budget. But I can say I loved drinking raw milk, as well as cooking with it. The favor is so rich, I just can't describe it. Much better than pasteurized. I never tried watering it down. My husband is a stick and so are my boys, so I didn't worry about the extra calories. Just some of my thoughts.
