Charlie's Soap

Can I tell you how much I love Charlie's Soap?

This past fall, after over a year of cloth diapering, I became discontent with my laundry detergent. I had used a variety of kinds: Method Free and Clear, Tide Free and Clear, and then a Kirkland's (Costco) "environmentally friendly" variety. I think the last one is what made me unhappy. I noticed my daughter getting more frequent diaper rashes as well as the fact that some of my good BumGeniuses weren't acting so waterproof anymore. I went back to the Tide, but that didn't help. I figured I needed to get rid of the buildup.

Since I was wanting to use fewer prefolds and get more BumGenius pocket diapers, and didn't want to face the same problems again, I decided I needed a new detergent altogether: one that actually followed all the specifications from BumGenius: no enzymes, no brighteners, and no added scents or coloring. No extra anything! I read all about the homemade detergents, but just didn't want to add anything else to my workload, especially not knowing the effect it would have on the diapers. Also, since I have a HE washing machine, I really wanted to be sure that what I used would not harm my pride and joy machine.

Then I remembered a friend who had tried Charlie's Soap Laundry Powder. She was still loving it. So I started reading about it on their website, and basically loved everything I read about it. I was sold. I found a distributor, and as a bonus, discovered a new cloth diapering/natural parenting source, too!

When I received my order, I was a little shocked at how small the bag of laundry detergent powder was! However, that was over two months ago. I have been using it for ALL our laundry ever since, and there is still half of it left! (I decided to simplify and use Charlie's Soap for all our laundry in order to keep any residue from other detergents out of the washer.)

The only drawback that I can think of is that now I am more wary of using cloth diapers on trips where I have to wash them in other people's machines. Now that we have switched over completely to BumGenius pocket diapers for my daughter for daytime use (and still use double stuffed Mommy's Touch or triple stuffed Happy Heiny's for night), I don't want to risk washing them in another person's machine that might have detergent or fabric softener residue in it. (I sound like a laundry snob now, I know.) But if necessary, I could just wash a couple of loads of clothes in the washer first, using Charlie's Soap, and that would maybe help clear out the residue before I wash the diapers. I have yet to try that, though.

So, all this to say, I am so happy I tried Charlie's Soap. If you are unsure whether you are using the right detergent for you cloth diapers, or simply want a practical, all-around laundry detergent, check out Charlie's Soap! I love it!

PS - I also altered my baby wipes recipe to an antifungal recipe. Since switching to Charlie's Soap and my new wipes recipe, the diaper rashes have stayed far away! I'll share that recipe as well, soon!

After reading this, It made me think about useing cloth diapers, and checked out your favorites...they look like they would work really well. How long have you used them, do the leak often? I am a stay at home right now and I think it would be great to save money on buying diapers but want to know how easy it is to use these...they look allot better then the old classic kinds. Have you already blogged about this, if so I would love to see a link...or you can email me or message me back that would be great. Any new information I can get on saving money on baby stuff is always appreciated! I am due in march :) Thanks, Missy....missysbaker@gmail.com

Thanks! I don't have baby diapers, but I have been wanting to go greener and cheaper this year. After my TIDE stockpile is gone I'll be ordering this! Thanks!

I've also heard rave reviews of Charlie's Soap but never got around to finding and ordering it online. I did find that Biokleen's Free and Clear laundry soap is fantastic! And we've actually discovered that it's cheaper load per load than mainstream detergents. We've used our $12.00 box of laundry soap for nearly a year for all our laundry and there's still a bit left. Isn't it amazing how the right detergent can change your life? Thanks for joining us this week for Thrifty Green Thursday!

I've heard a lot of good things about Charlie's, too. I have been using Biokleen powder and really like it. As for visiting other people . . . If I'm gone for just a weekend, I usually just bring my diapers back home and clean them there.

Thanks for joining us for Thrifty Green Thursday!

I love Charlie's Soap also! I bought it to use on my daughter's cloth diapers before she was born. About 2 months ago I thought I finally ran out of my large container and tried to use a homemade recipe I had read about to save money. I was so disappointed! I tried a couple different detergents and ended up going back to Charlie's Soap. They really have been the best for our family.

i LOVE charlie's soap! i used it on all our diapers and baby laundry for a long time, but when we ran out, i used sun, which was fine for a few months, and then all of the sudden, her covers and synthetic diapers started to stink! no amount of soaking, baking soda, or bio-kleen bac out could do anything! her cotton diapers and the rest of our laundry fared fine without, but i couldn't wait to get more charlie's.

i finally got a new shipment of charlie's this week, instantly ran a load of diapers (without stripping my washer or anyting), and they are VASTLY improved. i know that by the next load they will be perfect again.

my favorite thing about charlie's the the smell of pure clean--no perfumes or chemicals--just clean!

I have a question about the Charlie's soap and the bumgenius diapers. The Charlie's website says to use a regular scoop of detergent when washing cloth diapers, but the bumgenius website says to only use 1/4 or 1/8 of the recommended amount of detergent (we have a HE washer). How much do you use? Thanks!

Amy-
So far, I've been using a regular scoop when it is 2-3 days worth of diapers. If it is one day's worth, I'll use like half a scoop. I wasn't sure what to do about this either!
